One Night Music Celebrates Two Months of Local Santa Barbara Music
One Night Music celebrates its two-month birthday this week! We’ve now recorded the music of 24 artists, a number far beyond what we originally thought we would achieve by this point in time. The reason for this number is a result of the great interest in One Night Music from the community and the efforts of Megan Sullivan and Elia Vargas in booking the artists.
The reason that only 8 sessions are currently on the website, when we have so many recorded, is because of the amount of time that post production for each session takes. Each session takes approximately 15 to 20 hours of combined work in postproduction. Given that everybody involved in One Night Music is a volunteer, this means that we are only able to launch new sessions every two weeks. However, we are going to start to try to launch sessions every week, seeing that we are refining our postproduction processes to be more efficient.
Since we launched the website, there have been several new developments with One Night Music. First, two new Contributors have joined the team of Ian Andersen, Molly Hahn, Elia Vargas, Laura Birhsan, and Megan Sullivan. Karen Nedivi is now filming and illustrating for us and Candice Davantzis is writing for us. It’s only with the help of One Night Music’s contributors that we are able to sustain this project, so I send a very grateful welcome to both of them.
Additionally, Elia Vargas has since left Santa Barbara for the road. He knows little of where it will take him, but he knows that One Night Music will follow. Armed with my field microphone and his video camera he is already recording such artists as Paleo, Los Webelos, and Treesus in Santa Cruz, CA and Placervile, CA. To me, this is very exciting because it gives One Night Music a new dynamism in both the locations of filming and the artists that this will allow us to bring to you.
Finally, as another development, we have been getting increasingly experimental in our production of One Night Music sessions. As we have eased up on our self-imposed parameters for session production, we have found ourselves filming artists in different environments. This has been a great thrill and is comforted by the fact that we will always maintain our high level of quality in both the audio and video recordings.
For the months of April and May, we are continuing to book One Night Music sessions in Santa Barbara at our home base. As a way to increase the diversity of the music on the website, we are beginning to reach out to traveling artists who are playing gigs in town to see if they are interested in recording a session during their visit. We just filmed our first session in this fashion this past weekend to the music of Jesse Kellen Phillips from Ellie Fortune.
And there you have it, the One Night Music two-month birthday update. We will continue to record awesome music and share it with you because this is what we love to do!
