Jono Schaferkotter

Two years into my college career, I discovered filmmaking. Surrounded by talented and motivated classmates, Laura Greenwood and I founded a working film group, named Before North. This group would prove essential to the creation of my films and eventually evolve into my production house.

My first feature length film was a docudrama about college life called "One: A Story of Six" (2004). Immediately following One, I teamed up with Jay Wertzler to write and direct the ambitious existential western, "The Ballad of Jacob Wonder and Wesley Precious" (2005). The film debuted a month before he graduated with a BA in mixed-media Art. Out of college, I began my career in web and motion design. While weekdays were devoted to paying the bills, evenings and weekends were spent with the production house. Passionate about supporting other aspiring artists, I wrote and directed music videos for Etcetera Etcetera's "Vampire Eyes" and Emcee T's "Wiggle Out".

After a year I was eager to return to filmmaking so I jumped genres to direct Devin Fearn's zombie cult screenplay. Over eight months, the Before North crew sacrificed all of their free time to produce The Beginning (2007). Their biggest success to date, "The Beginning" premiered to a sold-out audience of nearly six hundred people at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. When I began freelancing as a designer, I moved back to music videos, creating pieces for Birds Fled From Me's "Under Bright Lights" and Tyler Parkford's "Out of Body Stunt Girl". After finishing my latest screenplay "NightLight", I realized that his new film would require far more capital than any of his previous work. In hopes to attract attention and investment, I wrote and directed my first short, Spaceman (2009). After a small sneak preview in February, Spaceman premiered at the Santa Cruz Film Festival in May.

Currently I'm working on tv spots and directing documentary that are taking me around the globe to places like Africa and China.

Other Projects & Interests

On the video side I make feature films, shorts, tv commercials, music videos and more. I'm currently recording my first album as well as finishing up a novel.

At my core I'm an artist and I'm currently creating pieces for a new exhibition in August that includes paintings, sculptures and video installations.
